Collecting & Submitting a Sample

How to Collect a Sample

For FEC & FEC Reduction Tests (FECRT)

  1. Collect fresh manure – ideally less than 12 hours old. One or two balls is plenty.

  2. Take from the inside – avoid soil, bedding, or urine contamination where possible.

  3. Bag it – place the sample in a zip-lock bag with the air squeezed out. (Sterile containers aren’t necessary.)

  4. Label clearly – include the horse’s name on each bag.

  5. Keep cool – refrigerate samples for up to 3–4 days if needed while you collect from multiple horses. Do not freeze.

For Tapeworm Testing

  1. Multiple balls = better: If possible, collect from 2–3 different fresh droppings in the paddock/stable. This improves accuracy, since tapeworm eggs are shed inconsistently.

  2. Quick option: If only one dropping is available, collect 3–4 balls from the middle of the pile.

  3. Sample size: Aim for about 3–4 balls in total (roughly half a zip-lock sandwich bag).

  4. Timing: Keep refrigerated until posting and send as soon as possible.

Do not freeze. Testing is processed weekly, so please allow a few extra days for results.

    Ordering both FEC & Tapeworm?
Just follow these tapeworm instructions — one sample is enough for both tests.Collect fresh manure – ideally 1–2 hours old. One or two balls is plenty.
